Explorer (1998)

Concept and creative process

’Explorer’ was a generic title for a series on BBC Choice which showed re-runs of classic BBC documentaries every weekday evening with wide-ranging topics. The sequence used a range of facial portraits of people, different in terms of age, sex, hair and eye colour and ethnicity. These were carefully lined up in the film shoot to make a phased and seamless transition possible from one face to the next in post-production. The faces were set against a changing background montage of different locations, from sky to desert, from mountains to the sea, from the built environment to the natural world, and the sequence culminated in the face of a child, seeing the world with fresh eyes.
