Europe Inside Out (1981)

Concept and creative process

This title sequence, for a series of progammes which looked at the way Europe was viewed from the outside, was designed by Michael Graham-Smith. To top and tail the sequence, he used a continuously revolving image of the European flags and the faces of the people of Europe, filmed on a rostrum camera through a specially constructed kaleidoscope. The introduction of the title ‘Europe Inside Out’ via the kaleidoscope triggered the flag and people montages to change to the United Kingdom, setting the pattern for the following programme titles translated into German, Danish and French.
