Encounters with Islam (1985)

Concept and creative process

The programme aimed to explain and inform the mysteries of Islam, a culture rich in meaningful lettering and decorative pattern work and from this came the simple concept for the titles. Unfortunately the animator had inadvertently got a cell the wrong way round in the animated transition to the English programme title, which necessitated all night paint and trace work in order to meet the shooting deadline with Bert Walker at Zephyr films. The moral is if it can go wrong it will go wrong, so I learned the hard way always to treble check the spellings!
