The Domesday Project (1985)

Concept and creative process

1986 was the 900th Anniversary of William the Conqueror's Domesday Book. A new record of life in Britain, a people's database, was compiled to output onto video disc. Still images animate through screen illustrating 900 years of history. As the camera tracks back it reveals the images have been playing back from a video disc player. The scene was shot 35mm on a portable motion control rig, which gave great fluidity to the whole move and flexibilty of timing to the sequence.
