The Doll (1975)

Concept and creative process

A drama serial in three parts in the Francis Durbridge strand. Three coloured photographs were taken in the photographic studio of the two leading actors and a doll. Everything was shot against a black background. The two actors' faces were lined up at the shoot so that they would be easier to morph between later during the rostrum camera shoot. The photographic shots were on 10 x 8 colour transparencies, in order to be able to back light the artwork under the rostrum camera. The photoset text was also made into photographic back-lit clear on black Kodaliths. This allowed everything to be back-lit against black on the rostrum shoot. A piece of ripple glass was bought from a glass shop and placed on a frame fairly high up above the rostrum table top. It was then gradually lowered until it was resting flat on the rostrum table. The higher the glass the more distorted the image. The ripple effect was created by the movement of the camera.
