Dixon of Dock Green (1976)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a drama series about daily life at a fictional London police station, featuring London policeman George Dixon, played by Jack Warner. Fully in the colour era since 1969, BBC One shows were now routinely made and broadcast in colour. ‘Dixon of Dock Green’ ran from 1955 to 1976. It was traditionally introduced by George Dixon’s “Good evening all” but now was nearing the end of its life. The opening titles for this series depicted through case notes the petty crime nature of some of the case work that confronted the traditional ‘bobby on the beat’. Jack Warner, who was by then in real life 80 years old, had been retired from the Force in his on-screen role , but had come back out of uniform as a temporary collator working in the back office.
