Did You See? (1987)

Concept and creative process

'Did You See?' was a programme in the pre-iPlayer era, which reviewed shows a viewer might have missed or wanted to see an excerpt from again. Jane Walker created a computer controlled shoot of a glass table containing objects that might be appropriate to a viewer of the content playing on a TV screen in the background - specs, a glass of wine, a cup of coffee, a watch and spectacle case. The camera constantly moves slowly in close up over these objects, at first seen from below through the glass table top and then from above at an angle which permits the show's logo to be reflected in the side of the coffee cup and also in the concave curve of the coffee spoon in the saucer. A complex set-up of props and camera moves and focus pulling which would have taken hours to prepare, but once keyed into the computer of the motion control camera was repeatable ad infinitum.
