The Dick Emery Show (1973)

Concept and creative process

Dick Emery starred in his own comedy sketch show, with special guests. The many faces of Dick Emery were revealed in a series of animated transitions between still photographs of him as he is, followed by him in the guise of some of his many comedic caricatures. The backgrounds of the stills alternated from black to white and the animation from one still to the next was facilitated by runs of vertically or horizontally animating mattes which covered and uncovered the stills in sequence. The titles, which were shot on a film rostrum camera, ended with the programme logo becoming colourised.
