The Day The Universe Changed (1985)

Concept and creative process

Titles for a factual series in which James Burke offered a personal view of the development of Western knowledge. The designer used the demonstration of a simple scientific phenomenon – the inversion of the world viewed through a crystal sphere, to allude to the discovery that the Earth was a planet orbiting the Sun and not vice-versa, as had previously been believed. The hand holding a sphere over the rising Sun encapsulated that thought. It was a discovery that changed Man’s view of the Universe for ever.
