Crime Writers (1978)

Concept and creative process

Titles for a series tracing the development of the crime story from Edgar Allan Poe to the present day. The titles by Anne Smith (Kelt) are a fine example of how to tell a story with just one illustration. Her concept was to use the typical cliché murder mystery scene, with all the culprits gathered together for the dénouement of the 'who dunnit'. In this case in fact all the characters are recognisable crime writers whose work featured in the series. A beautifully crafted and detailed illustration by Bob Cosford was shot using the rostrum camera to bring it to life with camera movement timed to the atmospheric music. The elegant programme logo designed by Anne Smith (Kelt) is also nicely integrated into the final wide shot.
