Comrade Dad (1986)

Concept and creative process

The opening titles for ‘Comrade Dad’, a sitcom set in a 1999 when England had been taken over by the Russians, forming the Communist state of USSR-GB. The series starred George Cole. The titles were based on a simple comedic reveal. Live action of civilians and soldiers was shot against stone buildings that were dressed with large red practical banners to give the impression of a war time USSR. As the camera followed the soldiers and widened we saw the more familiar architecture of Trafalgar square. A pan up Nelsons column revealed, instead of Admiral Nelson, a large rotating red star monument of a communist regime. The Red Star was rendered in 3D and tracked to the camera move to replace Nelson.
