Collector's World (1970)

Concept and creative process

‘Collector’s World’ was a programme for collectors about collecting. The titles were filmed and animated under a rostrum camera by hand. The first two scenes were filmed in reverse, with the letters and the cut-out pictures of objects removed sequentially, as the broad orange line was masked off by hand with a black matte. The camera zoomed out on the line in close-up and mixed to a grid of lines, representing a display case, containing a random arrangement of the previously seen letters and objects. This scene was shot in reverse too. As the lines and objects dissolved out, just the letters and the keyhole were left to be hand-animated to form the logo. The apostrophe dropped into place as the final act.
