Cold Warrior (1984)

Concept and creative process

An intriguing title sequence for a spy drama series, simple, elegant and surprising. A specially shot still portrait of the lead actor Michael Denison was filmed as a split screen under the rostrum camera. The camera tracks slowly out from the dark areas of the colour portrait in the left half of the screen, while a monochrome version of the right half of the portrait, overlaid with map data, whip-pans from one location to the next in close-up, before tracking out and rotating to match the left hand half of the portrait and finally dissolving from monochrome to colour to complete the whole portrait. The titles were superimposed over the dark areas of the photo on a separate camera pass.
