Clochemerle (1972)

Concept and creative process

Opening title for a comedy serial based on the novel by Gabriel Chevallier, adapted by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson. The title sequence consisted of filmed production footage of the Southern French vineyards that surrounded the fictional village of Clochemerle, the location for the series. The designer’s involvement was in choosing the size, style and layout of the type for the credits and filming the printed captions on a rostrum camera. The negative of the title reel was then delivered to the film editor to order a film optical of the combined title sequence at the film laboratory, before it could be cut onto the episode’s negative reel and a final transmission print made.
