Clarence (1988)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a sitcom starring Ronnie Barker, who played Clarence Sale, a short-sighted Cockney removals man who saw the world only as a blur, and Josephine Tewson, who played Jane Travers, a maid in a grand house. They were mutually attracted to one another and the series evolved around their somewhat unconventional relationship. The opening title illustrations were actually of Josephine Tewson’s Cheltenham town house and set the style for the period of the series, immediately prior to World War 2. The multiplane effect of the opening illustrations blended well with the actual live action shots that introduced the two leading actors in character.
