Concept and creative process
Churchill's book 'The History of the English Speaking Peoples' was the basis for this 26 part drama series and the titles reflected this broad canvas. Coins of the realm revolving in space were joined by union tokens, all turning like cogs in a wheel in a visual metaphor of the industrial revolution. A specially designed and crafted medallion bore the programme title on the obverse and revolved to reveal the original book title on the reverse. Production was by means of a stop-frame model shoot with mechanical rigs controlling the movement of the individual objects. The final composition was a film optical.
