Change of Direction (1980)

Concept and creative process

‘Change of Direction’ was a series of six programmes in which Ludovic Kennedy interviewed people whose lives had changed dramatically. The series included the astronaut Buzz Aldrin,John Erlichman, a Nixon aide jailed for his part in the Watergate scandal, and Jerry Rawlings, the Ghanaian flight lieutenant who became President. The series was produced by Tony Laryea for the BBC Community Programmes Unit. The low budget opening titles offered an opportunity for a simple typographic solution. They were filmed at the BBC Rostrum Camera Department. Transparencies of the words making up the title were brought into frame, as if on the side of an invisible cube. The lettering, superimposed and crossing each other in different directions, summed up visually the content of the series.
