The Car's The Star (1994)

Concept and creative process

Titles for a series focusing on classic automobiles, presented by Quentin Willson. Each programme dealt with a different car from the Automobile Hall of Fame with the help of the people who had bought it, driven it and still cherish at least the memory of it. The sequence showed the construction of a fantasy Jaguar car by a group of automated robots in an industrial setting. The orchestration of the action had some amusing touches, like the rubber-gloved hand and chamois leather. The robots were pre-programmed to perform certain functions which were filmed live with steam and dry ice smoke effects, adding to the atmosphere. Before completion the doors and programme title, rendered in CGI and added in post-production, closed over the assembly scene and a robot arm added a witty final flourish by tightening the bolt that was the apostrophe in the title.
