Cardiac Arrest (1996)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a contemporary hospital drama highlighting the inadequacies of the NHS, starring Helen Baxendale. It was written under the pseudonym of John MacUre by a former NHS junior doctor, drawing on his own personal experience of the health service in the 1990s. It was voted the most realistic hospital drama of all time by the UK medical profession. The titles are a dream-like live action sequence of the interior corridors of an NHS hospital, treated in post-production to create a soft focus, double imaged effect as a background to the credits.
