Concept and creative process
Titles for the classic teen drama set on Tyneside, about a group of young people who frequented the Byker Grove Youth Centre. It ran from 1989 to 2006 and launched the careers of many of the young actors, notably Ant and Dec. The programme title was created as a 3D CGI animation of the letters which constructed and de-constructed after a brief hold centre screen, over an abstract moving mosaic background. The CGI animation of the title was repeated in order to transition out of the titles and into the show. The letterbox device seen in previous series now occupied the centre screen over the mosaic background. Cut out live action shots of the cast appeared both inside and outside of the letterbox seen against location backgrounds. The complex compilation was made on a Quantel HAL.
