Concept and creative process
Titles for the first series of a classic teen drama set on Tyneside, about a group of young people who frequented the Byker Grove Youth Centre. It ran from 1989 to 2006 and launched the careers of many of the young actors, notably Ant and Dec. The title sequence comprised a panning aerial shot of Tyneside seen through a vignette in the programme title caption with the programme logo beneath it. The O of the word GROVE animated in sync with the shouts of ‘OOH!” on the soundtrack. The cast were introduced by cut-out live action shots of them animated in and out over the aerial shot. The complex compilation was made on a Quantel HAL.
