The British Connection? (1978)

Concept and creative process

Twelve films from different parts of the UK which explore some of the complexities of people's sense of identity. The idea of using a jigsaw effect for transitions and for forming the images was chosen to emphasise how the UK is interlocked in its nations of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The artwork consisted of four illustrations symbolising the four countries within the UK, a Union Jack, the logo and a set of black and white matte cels in the form of pegged animated jigsaw shapes. The jigsaw matte animations were used to cover up and reveal the illustrations, as well as to wipe down to reveal the logo. The logo consisted of a back-painted black on clear Kodalith with outline lettering. The reverse clear on black Kodalith matched exactly. Shot in-camera on a film rostrum rig.

Artwork - Fen Field.

Graphic Design and Creative Direction - Liz Friedman.
