The Borgias (1981)

Concept and creative process

Opening tiles for a costume drama about the family that dominated Italy in the Renaissance.
Designer Dick Bailey created the logo as drama title opener from a caption, drawn and painted to look like a three-dimensional bas-relief of the family name and the Spanish bull, an symbolic element on the Borgia heraldic crest. The sequence that followed consisted of shots of a peregrine falcon landing on the falconer’s gauntlet and settling before its next flight. Freeze frames of the bird provided the space to display the credits before the falconer raised it out of shot.
