The Bookworm (1994)

Concept and creative process

Titles for ‘The Bookworm’, a series for book lovers, presented by Griff Rhys Jones and produced by Daisy Goodwin. The opening title sequence was a beautifully crafted stop-frame model animation of an anthropomorphic bookworm and the book-inspired fantasy adventures of his alter egos in his subterranean habitat. The scenario for the sequence was conceived by designer Jane Walker in collaboration with 3 Peach Animation. This type of single frame animation and filming required extraordinarily high levels of concentration from the animators. Working with the aid of a video playback system, they were able to view the work as it was being shot and compare a frame already exposed with one about to be exposed.
