The Book Game (1982)

Concept and creative process

Titles for ‘The Book Game’, a series of literary quizzes chaired by Robert Robinson with guests who attempted to identify various extracts from novels. The title sequence consisted of an animated rustic vignette of an owl and foliage which topped and tailed a montage of stills showing the creation of the opening title. The printmaker was photographed using a motorised stills camera as he cut the wood block logotype by hand and took a print of the resulting programme title. The photographic prints were filmed on a rostrum camera in a sequence of four-frame mixes in-camera to create the illusion of stylised movement. The owl animation vignette and a matte were likewise shot on the rostrum camera and the two elements were composited using the matte in a film optical at the laboratory.
