Bonjour Françoise (1965)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a course of thirty lessons for absolute beginners in French. Jean Braid, now a long-term resident of France, recalls her work on this show: “The programme ‘Bonjour Françoise’ was my first production at the BBC in 1965. Alan Jeapes, my senior designer knew I was a francophile and he gave me complete control to work with the producer who wanted a friendly ‘French’ atmospheric opening title for a long-running series of language lessons. Using French copyright-free engravings and my own drawings, I montaged ‘French’ icons, combined with familiar ‘Metro' lettering. I organised a photo shoot with the actors and made a collaged animation.”
