Birthrights (1991)

Concept and creative process

Titles for a series of six films on culture and identity viewed from a variety of black perspectives. For the brief title sequence, Laurence Henry played with the word ‘BIRTH’, repeating and condensing and expanding it to form a transparent layer. In post-production this layer was composited with a background film montage, illustrating some of the topics the programmes would address. The word ‘RIGHTS’ appeared on its own, almost subliminally, in sync with the music track. A texture was layered over everything and was finally used clean as the background to the programme logo at the end of the sequence.
