Behind the Headlines (1993)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a programme that looked behind the headlines of the week's events as covered in the press. Former BBC designers, Graham McCallum, John Kennedy and Paul D’Auria set up MKD in 1986. They continued to work for the BBC on programmes, but also other broadcasters in the UK and internationally on corporate and channel branding with great success. Their design solution engaged the viewer in its use of movement, colour and texture and the way it linked seamlessly through to the studio. Torn paper effects created transitions between individually colourised and composited live action clips, revealing successive layers. The abbreviated days of the week were similarly treated in contrasting colourways and with positive/negative texturing of the parts of the images visible through the bold sans serif capitals. The sequence was created in a digital edit on a Quantel Henry.
