The Beechgrove Garden (1998)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a gardening show that celebrated Scottish horticulture and growing conditions. The sequence comprised production footage and stills which were composited together in a seamless digital edit. A wide screen format within the 4:3 displayed the edited gardening footage, panning each full frame sequence across the narrower picture area, each one joined with a soft edge to the following sequence, thus creating the effect of a long continuous panning shot of gardening activity. Around the perimeter of the wide screen ‘picture in picture’, cut-out stills of plants and flowers, berries and fungi were composited, partly keyed over the picture area and partly over the black surround. The sequence concluded with an animation of the programme logo over a plain background and a page turn to the presenter in the Beechgrove Garden.
