Beauty is in the Eye (1976)

Concept and creative process

This series took a look at what constituted beauty in the eye of the beholder in many different societies throughout the world. The titles for the opener were created with identical clear on black Kodaliths, and animated iris wipe mattes, backlit under the rostrum camera. The sequence required two separate runs through the camera. The first to film the photograph of the eye, fading in from black on the enlarged pupil and zooming back to a held position, then using animated iris mattes to close the eye down again to black. The second run was needed to double expose the logo animation and to zoom the logo back to its position as the gleam in eye. For the animation of the circular logo the top Lith was rotated in a clockwise direction while the bottom Lith was held. When the rotation was complete the back-lit logo appeared clear on black. For the episode title, again two back-lit liths were used to create the animation, panning laterally one over the other until their positions matched perfectly and the text was clear.
