Beasts Of The Field (1989)

Concept and creative process

Farm animals are complex social creatures and despite thousand of years of domestication, far closer to wild animals than they seem. Animal behaviourist Desmond Morris investigated and found them defending territories, attacking predators, feigning death and fighting for supremacy in their safe green fields. Designers Nick Wall and Julie Haslam composited specially shot and production footage of familiar animals, demonstrating the co-existence of the wild and domesticated species of animals like the pig, ram and bull. An illustrated frieze of the evolution of domesticated animals was added as another animated element to the sequence, which was composited with the title logo on a Quantel Harry digital editor.
