BBC2 Winter Still Life - Chameleon (1992)

Concept and creative process

The concept behind this series of BBC Two idents was the living sculpture or posed studio photograph, in which the subject is primarily still unless a movement occurs or is caused by an external factor. Great care was taken over the positioning and the lighting of the individual set-ups. The ‘Chameleon’ was a very subtle example of this creative approach. It is a reptile commonly known to be able to change its skin colour according to its emotions, so when the new BBC Two logo appears at the top left of screen, the chameleon’s eye immediately moves to focus on it and its skin colour changes quickly from grey to the BBC Two viridian green brand colour.
