BBC Two Curve 'Thought-Provoking' ident (2019)

Concept and creative process

Creative Conlan Normington decribes the creative process of this '2' Curve ident: "The ‘Thought Provoking’ mood needed to complement content that looks at familiar problems from a new viewpoint, content that challenges your opinions and forces you to take another look. To translate this into the piece, we created an op-art inspired shape that is always evolving into an infinite number of combinations of the '2' curve, morphing, twisting and changing. The aim of the ident was to create the feeling that each time you see the curve, it appears differently, as your opinions and views would change while watching the content. We experimented within the op-art style, trying to capture a 'trick of the eye' feeling. Once the final motion mechanic was resolved, 36 different variations of the ident were created from which the final selections were refined for the final piece. The 3D scene uses a camera moving down and around a twisted object with a combination of many twist, bend and bulge deformers to bring the curve perfectly into the '2' shape. The piece was made using Cinema 4D and the standard renderer."
