BBC Two Curve 'Authoritative' ident (2018)

Concept and creative process

The ident 'Authoritative' is one of the most frequently used of the new BBC Two animated idents. Its endless fascination lies in its 'cat's cradle'-like structure which revolves and tumbles multidirectionally in space, pausing only briefly at intervals as the curve of the 2 forms out of each new or repeat action. The designer Conlan Normington decribes the creative process: "The ‘Authoritative’ mood needed to complement some of the more heavy content such as news items, creating an unobtrusive breath of fresh air between shows. We explored many different areas for this mood from calm waves and shadows rippling from the curve, hazy landscapes, math art sculptures through to kinetic sculptures. The final sculpture twists and turns in a calming, yet physically impossible way. The sculpture is created by using the 2 curve to drive the slats placement and uses the different axis of the curve to twist and turn the sculpture. The piece was made using Cinema 4D and the physical renderer."
