BBC One Rhythm & Movement - Capoeira dancers (2002)

Concept and creative process

‘Rhythm & Movement' was the theme for all BBC One idents from 2002-2006. It replaced the BBC Globe Balloon series that had been on-air since 1997. 'Rhythm & Movement' was explored through a great variety of activities from t’ai chi to tap dance, from skateboarding to salsa, performed by people from all walks of life, in locations throughout the UK. Apart from the theme for the scenarios, the brand colour red was the simple device which linked the idents together. In ‘Capoeira’, an ancient Brazilian form of martial arts involving complex acrobatic dance moves, two masters of the art perform flowing movements as they circle around each other on a rooftop platform, set against the backdrop of the London skyline. The new series was created by the Lambie-Nairn design consultancy.
