Argument (1974)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a programme in which Michael Dean chaired a discussion between two people of opposite views on an issue of the day. The production needed nothing more than a logo with which to open the studio discussion. A background pattern was designed, consisting of repeated rows of the logo, printed in alternating colours of red and green. This was defocused slightly and a clean version of the logo, made somewhat sharp and spiky by the surrounding outline, zoomed slowly up from centre screen, keyed over the background. The background dissolved over the last few bars of the introductory music to the shot of the studio discussion group and the logo alone, which disappeared on the cut to close-up on the moderator.
