Africa Nation (1995)

Concept and creative process

Title sequence for a single episode spin-off from ‘Video Nation’, depicting everyday people in Africa. African people were given a camcorder to shoot their everyday lives in order to reveal a unique picture of how they lived. Shots supplied by the production were combined with imagery such as fabric and a wooden artefact shot by the designer. These were inserted into a still of a wall of televisions, created in Quantel paintbox. The title caption involved hand lettering the word ‘Africa’. This was done using a large paintbrush with black paint on a very large board to create the required effect. The 'shash' which appears intermittently in the TVs was created in advance in an edit suite using various components. Put together at the Framestore by Mike McGee on a Quantel Harry.
