Afoot Again in the Past (2002)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a series of short programmes investigating Britain's architectural heritage. The series ran throughout the year to a rather erratic schedule on alternate days, even sometimes every day, mornings, afternoons or evenings – any time where there was a 10 minute slot to fill on BBC Two. The concept behind the design for the titles was footfall, the tread of well-known visitors to an extremely eclectic mixture of architectural gems, offering their own personal viewpoint on what they had observed. Shot live action in a studio with the camera filming up through a supported sheet of toughened glass, the underside of a variety of differently patterned shoe soles was filmed with coloured lighting. The footage was manipulated in size and orientation during post-production and layered with a tunnel effect created from filtered light beams to give the sense of a background stretching back in time.
