The 607080 Show (1980)

Concept and creative process

Titles for a series of Further Education programmes looking at new interests and activities for the retired, presented by Roy Hudd and Irene Thomas. Anne Smith (now Kelt) designed a‘607080’ logo where the numerals 6, 7 and 8 were richly decorated with patterns of themselves and zero, and the zeros with a mixture of all of the numbers. The camera explored these pattern combinations in close-up, intercut with full screen shots of 60, 70 and 80 individually. After a continuous pan along the row of full screen numerals, the camera pulled back to reveal the whole logo and the remainder of the show’s title mixed in. The sequence was shot using all of the movement capabilities of a rostrum camera.
