Take a break with Natalie Garrett Brown

Hi there! What is your name and role at Ravensbourne?
Natalie Garrett Brown, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Ravensbourne University London.
It’s time for a coffee break! What’s your go-to drink or snack?
In the morning it is likely to be a cortado, in the afternoon Earl Grey or a strong English breakfast tea. Homemade cake is also a favourite at any time of day!
What’s the best part of your role?
It’s a real privilege to be joining Ravensbourne as DVC, and I’m excited to be part of its next chapter. I’m really looking forward to working with staff, students, alumni and partners as we build on Ravensbourne’s success.

How do you like to unwind and de-stress?
We have two miniature schnauzers at home, and their cheeky personalities are a great antidote to any stressful moment. I also enjoy movement practices such as yoga and Pilates alongside spending time with family and friends.
What advice would you give to your 18-year-old self?
Always take time to savour and enjoy the small moments.
A book I recently loved is…
I have just finished reading Inner Sense by Caroline Williams which brings together much of the latest thinking and research around interoception. It is a bit of a niche read, but it speaks to my interest in movement and perception. I’m also a podcast fan across a range of subjects and interests.
The best dessert is…
Anything homemade, especially if it has chocolate or raspberries. I also love a good cheese board.

My favourite thing to do in London is…
With a background in dance and performing arts, I love seeing performances and exhibitions across London. I also really value the city’s history and cultural richness; it’s one of my favourite cities to spend time in.
If I won an all-expenses-paid trip, I’d go to…
That’s a hard one, there are still lots of places I’d love to visit, but a safari or a trip to Iceland to see the Northern Lights would be high on the list.
What’s your go-to comfort TV show or film?
I love a good crime thriller when I want to get drawn into the story. I also enjoy shows with strong costume and set design, like Mad Men or The Handmaid's Tale. But my ultimate Christmas comfort watch is the film The Holiday.
