Ravensbourne students gain experience with industry-leading broadcast technology at Sony, Pinewood Studios
Students from Ravensbourne University London recently visited Sony headquarters at Pinewood Studios, gaining experience with cutting-edge broadcast technologies used across the film and television industry.
The visit brought together students from the BA (Hons) Digital Television Production and BSc (Hons) Broadcast Engineering courses for a full day of industry talks and practical training sessions.
Throughout the day, students were introduced to a range of advanced production tools and workflows, including technologies that are typically not accessible within higher education settings, such as virtual production panels, but also top-end cinema cameras and production switchers.
Training was delivered by industry professionals, including Ravensbourne alumnus Andy Hotten, who provided insights into how this equipment is used in live broadcast and production environments. Students were able to build on their technical knowledge while gaining valuable exposure to real-world industry practices.
Andy quote
Great to welcome the next generation of TV production staff and engineers to our demo facility in Pinewood Studios. It was my pleasure to explain how our equipment is used in daily productions, and the students asked some really thoughtful questions. As an ex-student myself, I’d be very happy to support future activities.”
The visit forms part of an ongoing collaboration between Ravensbourne and Sony, with discussions underway around a longer-term educational partnership. This would provide students with continued access to industry-standard equipment and training opportunities, strengthening the university’s commitment to industry-led learning.
The day was supported by Sony representatives Dan Culea, Mark Preston and Tanya Hobbs, alongside Ravensbourne staff, helping students connect their learning to current industry workflows and future career pathways.
