Built for Industry: Jo Khoo
The next instalment in our Built for Industry series features Ravensbourne alumna, Jo Khoo, who graduated from our MBA Fashion: Business and Entrepreneurship course. She now works as Senior Ecommerce Manager at RIXO.
We caught up with Jo to hear about her career journey, the impact of her Ravensbourne education, and her advice for students looking to build careers at the intersection of creativity, business and technology.
Jo quote
The academic mentorship at Ravensbourne reshaped how I approach my work. The public speaking, presentation and data synthesis skills I honed at the university are what I rely on most.”
What have you been doing since graduating from Ravensbourne University London, and how has your career progressed so far?
Since graduating, I took some time to travel and truly immerse myself in everything London has to offer. My career has since returned to the digital fashion space. I am now the Senior Ecommerce Manager at RIXO, where I oversee the digital trading and optimisation strategy.
Were there any industry projects, live briefs, placements, or collaborations during your studies that helped shape your career path?
During my MBA, we had presentations at the conclusion of every module. Looking back, I didn't realise at the time just how pivotal they would be to my career. Public speaking used to be incredibly nerve-wracking for me – it was definitely a personal weakness. However, the sheer frequency of these presentations forced me out of my comfort zone.
Beyond building confidence in public speaking, my MBA taught me the art of data-backed storytelling – how to conduct deep market research and use those insights to defend and validate my strategic ideas to stakeholders.
How did the connections you made at Ravensbourne with tutors, peers, or industry partners influence your professional journey?
The academic mentorship at Ravensbourne reshaped how I approach my work. My course leader, Natascha, constantly pushed me beyond the classroom, presenting our group with external opportunities she knew would benefit our growth. My final module advisor, Trishna, challenged me at every turn, pushing me well outside my comfort zone.
Their guidance taught me to question the status quo, think critically, embrace challenges and constantly strive for a higher standard in my professional life.
What skills or experiences from your time at Ravensbourne do you use most in your current role?
The public speaking, presentation and data synthesis skills I honed at Ravensbourne are what I rely on most. As a Senior Ecommerce Manager, I lead cross-functional teams and present trade data every week. The ability to analyse complex analytics, develop a strategy and present it with confidence has been invaluable and is something I developed during my time on the programme.
How does your career development connect to Ravensbourne's current focus on creativity, technology and business?
What I love about my role at RIXO is that it's a constant balancing act between art and science. Working in ecommerce for a fashion brand means I wear two different hats every day.
On one side, I'm looking at the numbers – tracking revenue targets, analysing customer data and identifying ways to improve the online shopping experience. On the other, ecommerce is visual storytelling. I spend a lot of time collaborating with our marketing and creative teams, as well as our technology development agency, to make sure RIXO's vibrant brand identity comes to life when someone visits our website.
It's the perfect blend of business logic and creativity.
What advice would you give current Ravensbourne students hoping to start out in industry?
Focus on your own journey. In a creative and competitive environment, it is easy to compare your timeline or achievements with those of your peers. Remember that your path is unique.
Instead of trying to replicate what others are doing, strive to stand out by being the best version of yourself, work incredibly hard and, above all, stay curious.
What are you most proud of in your career so far?
I am incredibly proud of my decision to move to London, step into a brand-new market and broaden my global industry experience. It was a brave next step, but it completely paid off.
I've always pushed myself to grow with every step I take. Today, being in a senior leadership position where I can manage, mentor and empower a team is deeply rewarding. It feels amazing to pass on the same kind of impactful guidance to others that I was fortunate enough to receive early in my career.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I am genuinely thrilled to be back in the digital fashion space. Joining the RIXO team has been such a rewarding experience. There's something incredibly special about working for a female-founded UK brand. Being surrounded by people who are genuinely passionate about the product and vision is incredibly inspiring. Everyone cares deeply about their craft, which creates an amazing working environment.
I'm looking forward to helping drive the brand's global growth into its next chapter, and I fully intend to call London home for a very long time.
