Professor Christos Manolas PhD, MSc, MA, PGCert, SFHEA

Biography

Professor Christos Manolas leads Ravensbourne's Audio-Visual Media (AVM) Lab and is the Course Leader for the BA (Hons) Music and Sound Production programme.

He has been passionate about music and technology from an early age, building a career that blends both fields for over 25 years. Professor Manolas' experience spans music production, audio and sound design, software development, and audiovisual media. He has worked as a musician, sound designer, developer, and educator across a range of academic and industry roles.

Research Interests and Professional Certifications

Professor Manolas' research focuses on music and audio production, immersive and spatial sound, and virtual and augmented reality. He is also interested in multimodal perception and how digital technologies are shaping media and education. Professor Manolas is a member of the Audio Engineering Society. 

He is also certified as an Avid Pro Tools Professional (Dolby Atmos), Unity Certified Programmer (User), and Unity Certified VR Developer (User).

Teaching History

Professor Manolas joined Ravensbourne in 2019 after teaching as a Senior Lecturer and Subject Leader in Audio Production at Rose Bruford College (2018 to 2019) and as an Audio Production Lecturer at SAE Institute (2017 to 2019). 

Before that, Professor Manolas worked at the University of York (2010 to 2015) as an Associate Lecturer and Laboratory Leader in Sound Design and Music Technology. From 2000 to 2006, he taught IT and software development at universities and colleges in Greece. 

His academic career began in 1992, teaching undergraduate music performance and theory.

External and Reviewing roles

Professor Manolas serves as an External Examiner for the University of Hertfordshire and is a reviewer for Sage Publications, IAFOR, and Routledge/Informa UK.

Academic Qualifications

He holds a PhD in Stereoscopic 3D Media (Sound), along with postgraduate degrees in Post Production (Sound Design) and Music Technology. 

His academic background also includes undergraduate degrees in Music Performance, Computing, and Creative Media.
