Biography

After a thirty-nine-year career at the BBC, Guy joined the Digital Television Production team at Ravensbourne University London as a Sessional Lecturer in February 2022. Guy started his career at the BBC in 1982 as a Technical Operator in radio, working on a variety of Radio 1 and Radio 2 shows with such notable names as: John Peel, Steve Wright, Kenny Everett Ken Bruce and Terry Wogan, to name but a few.  

His other duties involved working in the main sound control room at Broadcasting House, London. In 1988, he moved to Television Centre to work main national news programmes where he gained a wealth of experience working in a number of technical areas where Guy became a Transmission Manager, responsible for setting up live remote sources. When Lime Grove moved to TV Centre in 1991, he started his lighting training which led him to become a Lighting Director, responsible for lighting the BBC’s main national news programmes.  

Guy has worked on numerous programmes such as BBC Breakfast, Breakfast with Frost, Andrew Marr, the BAFTA award winning Victoria Derbyshire programme, Newsround, Working Lunch, Politics Live, BBC World, Newsnight, as well as the main BBC News programmes. He has worked on such historical events as the morning of Princess Diana’s death, The Queen Mother’s funeral and 9/11. Over a number of years, Guy worked as the Broadcast Duty Manager and Duty Operations Manager at Broadcasting House, Bush House and Television Centre (News), as well as the Duty Operations Manager at Media City in Salford.  

Apart from his craft role, Guy had a programme commissioned in 2000, which was “Night of a Thousand Shows”, which celebrated 40 years of TV programmes made at the BBC’s Television Centre. He also wrote the history of Broadcasting House which was submitted as part of the planning application to enable the BBC to develop Broadcasting House. Guy’s research on TV Centre and Broadcasting House was later used in the publication “Building The BBC.” He advised Mark Hines on his book: “The Story of Broadcasting House: Home of the BBC.” Guy left the BBC in March 2021 and joined the teaching team in February 2022.
