Welcome information

Image

For your First Week task, please bring in a reference photograph which means something to you (on your phone or laptop). We will upload these to a shared online board, so you can see what everyone's brought in and get a first sense of each other's interests and ways of seeing.

Reading

We'll go through the full reading list for the year during your first week. If you'd like a head start on thinking about projects and ideas, it's worth picking up:

The Photographers' Playbook, Fulford. J, 2014, Aperture, New York

And to help you settle into university-level study more broadly:

The Arts Good Study Guide, Chambers. E, Northedge A, 2008, Open University Press, Milton Keynes

Course equipment

You will benefit from having the following equipment to support your studies. If you have any questions, please speak to your course team during your first week. You do not need to bring this equipment to your first week unless specified.

• A DSLR or mirrorless camera that can save a RAW file and has interchangeable lenses
• An external hard drive to save and back up large files (this can be purchased in the first few weeks of the course)
• Note-taking is important – you might use your laptop or tablet, but you might want to bring a good notebook and pen if this is more comfortable and easier for you
• We use a system called Canvas for communication – it works well on your laptop, but we also like students to have it on their smartphone, so please bring your phone and/or tablet with you during your First Week.

Laptop requirements

Please see our laptop requirements document to ensure you have a device that will be suitable for your studies.
