The Power and The Glory (1991)

Concept and creative process

‘The Power and the Glory’ was a series dedicated to the competitive sport of motor racing in all of its many different aspects and to the daring men who pushed the limits of speed. The brief was to create a mood of excitement and exhilaration. Liz Friedman achieved this by rotoscoping live action of the cars to get the initial visuals and movement, and the use of hand-drawn, multicoloured, rough scribble effects to help emphasise the feeling of action and movement. The basic drawings were worked on by adding layers of pegged cinemoid (cels) which were worked up with coloured drawing until the required rough effect was achieved. The occasional flares and bright light effects were achieved by shooting some back-lit effects on the rostrum camera, using the artwork as a guide to matte out areas not to be affected. The rotoscoping was done by animator Dennis Sutton.
