My Son, My Son (1979)

Concept and creative process

‘My Son, My Son' was the story of the sons of two friends who also grow up to be friends. The passing years however create circumstances that divide them. Their fathers learn that sons do not always grow up in the way a parent might wish. Stefan Pstrowski distilled the essence of this tale into a memorable image. The sequence was filmed live action, with time-lapse filming on the wax model clasped hands and the wax programme logotype, which was also shot in reverse, so that it formed before the viewer’s eyes. The white titles and a black drop shadow were filmed on a rostrum camera top lit and back lit to create the mattes and masters to combine them with the background shot in a film optical.
