Leeds International Piano Competition (1975)

Concept and creative process

The Leeds International Piano Competition was a well-established feature of the music scene. Winners were assured engagements on the concert platforms of the world. A black laquered piano was photographed from above using a 5x4 plate camera in the BBC photographic studio. This 5x4 colour transparency was then enlarged photographically onto a 16x9 coloured transparency, which was then shot back-lit on a 35mm rostrum camera. The lettering was added on a separate run in-camera. This was produced again by the back-lit method. The lettering had a coloured gel behind and the lighting effect was produced by panning a gobo across to break up the solid flat colour.
