It Doesn't Have to Hurt (1990)

Concept and creative process

The documentary series ‘It Doesn't Have to Hurt' was aimed at getting people out of their armchairs and moving, the most basic way being by walking. I devised a walking man symbol who featured as a small icon throughout over footage of other exercises e.g. swimming, running, dancing etc., demonstrating the concept of 'health through activity'. The production provided a variety of footage of everyday activities. To unify it I made it all black and white and then enlivened it by the addition of colourful movement arrows, graphic symbols, marks and typographic instructions, and composited the whole sequence in a digital edit suite.
