Goodbye Mr Chips (1984)

Concept and creative process

A six part drama series about the memories of an 85 year old ex-schoolmaster set in the shadow of the Great War (WW1). The book on which it was based was an instant bestseller when first published in 1934. The sequence uses a variety of props associated with a public school in that era. References to the Great War are implied by showing a military hat as one of the props. The idea is a simple one which relies on the objects chosen, the lighting of the piece, the pace of the movement and the music. Added interest is delivered by the shadow of a small boy in the window, which was created by a gobo (a cut out shape from cardboard) placed in front of a light to cast a shadow on a wall. The boy was shot separately and composited in at the film laboratory. The sequence was shot on 35mm film at Boreham Wood.

Lighting Cameraman - Douglas Adamson at Stewart Hardy Films.
